Phuket City, or Phuket Town, is a lively, bustling, administrative and active centre of Phuket. But the beauty and life in the city is occasionally overlooked and bypassed in favour of the beauty of lush sandy beaches. This is a mistake to forget Phuket Town. There’s much more to see, explore and do in Phuket City. Phuket City is an exciting mix of modern and ancient peace and attractions. The town has also been upgraded to city status officially.

The city life wakes round the clock. Monks walk, busy markets, shopping for restaurant ingredients, non-stop bustling streets, all are hallmarks of the city, from morning to late night. Night marks activities in the discos, bars and restaurants.

The town is historically rich with Chinese and Buddhist temples, shrines, wonderfully preserved shophouses, small printing shops, museums, mansions and cafes. Many mansions are more than a century old. The Sino-Portuguese building architectures are attractions in their own right. Early mornings and evenings are the best times to roam around the city to watch this splendor.

Thalang Road is heart of Phuket Town. It is the commercial and economical center of the city. Chinese handicrafts, medicines and herbal medicines are the exotic and unique offering available here.

Century-old Sino-Portuguese or Sino-Colonial shophouses and residential buildings are worth seeing here. Cooking and bathing facilities in the cool breeze and often in rainwater with a variety of exotic fish are main attractions of the city.

The annual Old Town Cultural Festival held every February is the main festival on Thalaing Road near Krabi Road and Soi Romani. With “Yaya” style traditional dressing, a nightly history-based son et lumiere show in a mansion nearby is the heart of the event.

Bygone-era architecture can be seen at the Chyn Pracha House on Krabi Road — a brilliant attraction which is open to public and visitors. The On On hotel on Phang Nga Road in Phuket city is a historical establishment, equally attractive for visitors. On this road many arts and textile shops and a French restaurant are also located.

The Shrine of the Serene Light was built in 1889 is also located nearby. On the junction of Phang Nga Road and Thepkassatri Road, further east, are an old vacated bank building and a police station.

Another monumental attraction, Thavorn Museum, is located on Rassada road in Phuket Town. It holds ancient typewriters, strongboxes, antique postboxes, toys, and photos galleries from the past. It’s a marvelous collection of memorabilia.

The nightclubs of Phuket City are as much a draw as the beaches of Phuket. Drinking, dancing, laughs and shouts fill the nights in Phuket City. Live bands play different verities of music including folk and western. Locals or expats, visitors or travelers, all enjoy the Phuket City nights with equal passion.
